Set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars,Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel Sylvia’s Lovers depicts life in Monkshaven under the pervasive shadow of war and Sylvia’s tragic romance.Through the portrayal of this historical period,Gaskell explores how individuals navigate intellectual and emotional responses to social changes, while simultaneously reflecting on the turbulent social dynamics embedded in historical processes. In the light of Raymond Williams’s concept of“structure of feeling”,the novel is shown to delicately portray the collective psychology and social conditions of the Victorianera populace. They voice concerns over national policies yet take pride in the achievements of the Empire. To some extent, the novel engages in the construction of the empire, contributing to the enhancement of British national identity and the reinforcement of imperial consciousness.
