In the Nirvana Sutra illustration depicted on the main wall in Cave 127 at the Maijishan Grottoes, there are two men standing and facing each other who have always been overlooked by academia.By combining on-site observation, comparative study of the composition of the cremation scenes in relevant Nirvana stories, and research on the records of Buddhist scriptures, this study has concluded that the two men are likely the Mallas mentioned in the Paranirvana Sutra, and that they were depicted in this mural in order to illustrate the story of the Mallas extinguishing a fire with milk fragrance after the Buddha entered nirvana. This choice of image combination indicates that the Nirvana Sutra illustration in Cave 127 was influenced by Gandhara art, while also featuring several unique characteristics and designs from local culture.
