Japanese encephalitis(JE)is an acute infectious disease of the central nervous system caused by Japanese encephalitis virus(JEV),which is mainly transmitted by bites of Culex tritaeniorhynchus mosquitoes. The JEV has only one serotype but can be divided into five genotypes(G-Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ,Ⅳ,Ⅴ).The JE is widely prevalent in Asia, with Southeast Asia being the origin and main epidemic area of JEV.Yunnan province is adjacent to Southeast Asian countries and belongs to one of the main epidemic areas of JE in China.Yunnan province is home to the prevalence of G-Ⅲ and G-Ⅰ of JEV.It is also the first place in Asia where the G-Ⅰ of JEV was isolated. It plays an important role in the transmission and spread of JEV in China. This paper reviews the genotyping of JEV isolates from Yunnan province over the years,as well as research on the origin, genetic evolution of JEV and its epidemiological characteristics,so to provide reference data for further in-depth research and prevention and control of JE.
