Margaret Atwood meticulously depicts the bodily discipline imposed on women of childbearing age in The Handmaid’s Tale.Nevertheless, the intrinsic connection between bodily discipline and identity has received scant scholarly attention. This paper examines, through a meta-spatial lens, how the totalitarian regime employs technologies to enact embodied virtualization on fertile female bodies. These bodies are alienated into material symbols of the“utopian unconscious,”while their identities are forcibly fragmented across three dimensions:the allopoietic machine(original body),the handmaid(embodied body),and the mother yearning for bodily freedom(avatar). This fragmentation culminates in an absolute utopian allegorical existence.By interpreting the novel through the interactive framework of space and technology, this study unveils new paradigms of power trepidations over female body under technological innovation and profound critique over technological alienation.
