Music in state rituals serves as an affective and symbolic semiotic system that transcends verbal language, playing a central role in constructing collective identity and conveying authoritative imagery within modern nation-states.The military parade,as a ritualistic state event that highly integrates“visual-auditory”unity and political symbolism, features musical elements that are far from mere background accompaniment.Rather, they are meticulously encoded ritual symbols and tools of cultural governance, systematically contributing to the construction of the narrative and the emotional solidification of the Chinese national community. This paper analyzes the song repertoire of the 2025 V-Day Parade—China's military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.Drawing on perspectives from music semiotics and ritual theory,it constructs a multidimensional analytical framework to explain how parade music—functioning as a“national voice”—effectively fosters a sense of community for the Chinese nation through systematic symbolic practice and emotional mobilization across multiple dimensions. The research finds that the song sequence in the V-Day Parade—through its meticulously ritualized arrangement—forges the sense of community for the Chinese nation across three interrelated dimensions:First, the resonance of history and the summoning of collective memory that fosters a temporal dimension of Chinese national community consciousness. The four selected songs form a complete narrative loop of“suffering-resistance-leadership-victory,”providing a clear, legitimate, and emotionally resonant historical timeline and a profound emotional foundation for the sense of community for the Chinese nation.Second, the performance of power and the symbolism of order that enhances spatial and structural dimensions of community consciousness.Throughout the“ceremony”and“review of troops”segments, music evolves into an auditory embodiment of state power and military strength, working in concert with visual elements to materialize the power structure and organizational order of the community.Third, the concept of pluralistic unity and future orientation that extends the breadth of identity and the visionary dimension of community consciousness. The musical design of the“march-past”segment centrally demonstrates the breadth, vitality, and future aspirations of the community. The closing piece,Ode to the Motherland, symbolizes a nationwide emotional mobilization. It effectively integrates the previously showcased“pluralistic”forces into a cohesive“unified”national identity, thereby linking historical contexts with future ambitions.By analyzing the song sequence of the V-Day Parade, this paper demonstrates that parade music—as an active and constructive“national voice”—successfully transforms the abstract concept of the“Chinese national community”into a tangible, audible, and resonant emotional experience that fosters a sense of spiritual belonging across historical, contemporary, and future dimensions through its meticulously coded symbolic system and ritual performance. The conscious engagement with historical narrative and systematic symbolism evident in its musical design signifies a sophisticated and deliberate application of sound within state rituals. This study reveals the significant role of music in facilitating emotional mobilization and identity formation within political rituals.Furthermore,it offers a critical auditory perspective for understanding the mechanisms that generate the sense of community for the Chinese nation. It additionally opens new avenues for subsequent research on the typological efficacy of the“national voice”,its evolving impact in the context of new media dissemination, and audience reception and interpretation.
