From September 2020 to January 2021,as a salvage excavation in response to the Jingmen-Jingzhou High-Speed Railway project, the Hubei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, along with other institutions, excavated the Xincun cemetery in Shayang County. The investigation uncovered two spouse burials in separate pits within a shared burial enclosure(M1 and M2),each featuring a mound, along with accompanying chariot-and-horse pits(CHMK1 and CHMK2)and above-tomb structural remains. The tomb occupants were both identified as lower-ranking aristocrats from the Chu state(Xia Dafu).Although the main tomb M1 had been looted, the discovery of its above-tomb structural features fills a gap in the evidence for such structures in southern China during the Warring States period. The subsidiary tomb M2 was found intact and yielded abundant grave goods. The excavation of the Xincun cemetery provides significant material for investigating the use of above-tomb structures and associated mortuary practices in the pre-Qin period,as well as for studying the organization of aristocratic clan cemeteries, burial assemblages, and chariot-and-horse burial customs in the mid-Warring States period Chu state.
