Driven by the Dual Carbon Strategy,China’s building materials industry is proactively advancing fuel substitution to achieve low-carbon transition. This paper systematically evaluates the substitution potential of biochar in the building materials industry such as cement and glass industries, from the perspective of technical, economic, and environmental feasibility. The study reveals the calorific value of woody biochar is generally exceeding 30 MJ/kg,and the sulfur content is less than 0.5%.Its physicochemical properties and combustion characteristics both meet industrial fuel requirements.Retrofitting of combustion and feeding systems are required for technological adaptation of biochar fuel, along with alkali and chlorine element control mitigating coating hazards.Economic analysis indicates that the production cost of biochar is about CNY 1,636/t,which is higher than coal at CNY 900/t.Compared with medium-sulfur petroleum coke powder priced at CNY 2,000-2,300/t,biochar is more economically competitive. This advantage enables glass manufacturing to save 13.8% fuel cost.Biochar production delivers a carbon-negative benefit of -1,694.3 kgCO_(2)e/t.When replacing petroleum coke powder and coal, the net emission reductions are 236.6 kgCO_(2)e/t and 717.7 kgCO_(2)e/t,respectively.The study confirms that biochar fuel is industrially feasible and recommends overcoming bottlenecks through process optimization, industrial trials, and policy coordination.
