The interpreters of the Macao China Senate played a pivotal role in the city's history and in Sino-Western exchanges. From the mid-18th to the mid-19th century, during which the Chinese term“通事”(tongshi)was associated with two Portuguese terms:lingua/lingoa and interprete. The latter term denotes a higher level of professionalism and status, encompassing responsibilities that extended beyond oral interpretation to include the translation of official documents. The interpreters of the Macao Senate undertook a wide range of duties, including oral and written translation, mediating disputes between Chinese and foreigners, managing criminal cases, overseeing social affairs and maritime trade, and teaching Chinese. This group exhibited notable characteristics:Compared to their counterparts in Guangzhou trade during the same period, they demonstrated superior professional competence, with some achieving significant social and political standing.Operating under a“dual leadership”system, they acted as representatives of the Senate while simultaneously facing pressures and risks imposed by Chinese authorities. Moreover, their linguistic expertise rendered them indispensable to the Senate, cementing their role as vital intermediaries in Sino-Portuguese relations.
