大阿尔伯特的《论矿物》被一些现代矿物学史家誉为矿物学先驱之作。纽曼充分考虑了大阿尔伯特的炼金术背景,将他的矿物理论置于13世纪炼金术之辩的思想脉络中,建构出他与微粒炼金术之间的隐秘关联。这一叙事轻视了亚里士多德形质论对其矿物成因理论的深刻影响。面对自然与技艺的鸿沟,大阿尔伯特以不同于微粒炼金术的方式完成了二者的调和。他利用形质论的理论资源,在本体论上消除了矿物自然生成与炼金术嬗变的区别,并借助一些准形式的概念工具来平衡元素论和形质论的张力,继而通过展开实体变化的具体过程,为技艺参与物质嬗变指定了理论上的可能位置。
Albertus Magnus's De mineralibus is hailed by some modern historians of mineralogy as a pioneering work in the field of mineralogy.William Newman's research provides a more comprehensive understanding by considering the alchemical context of Albert's time and situating his discourse on minerals within the framework of 13th-century alchemical debates,thereby revealing a hidden connection to corpuscular alchemy.However,this narrative overlooks Aristotelian hylomorphism's profound influence on Albert's mineral genesis theory.In addressing the gap between nature and art,Albert reconciles them distinct from corpuscular alchemy,utilizing hylomorphism to dissolve the distinction between natural generation and alchemical transformation in the ontology.Moreover,he successfully balances the tension between elementalism and hylomorphism by implementing quasi-formal conceptual tools.Finally,he delineates theoretically possible positions for artificial art to engage in transformations by elucidating the concrete processes of substantial change.
