The ancient Greek concept of oikoumene initially referred to the inhabited world.By the 6th century BCE,drawing from mytho-epic narratives, this concept was envisioned as a centrally symmetrical,island-like continent encircled by the Oceanus. As Greek colonial expansion and intercultural exchange throughout the Mediterranean world intensified, empirical geography began to challenge this traditional depiction.Herodotus, drawing on Eastern geographical knowledge, reconceptualized the oikoumene as a space for political governance. The conquests of Alexander the Great marked a pivotal imperial turn in the concept's evolution,as he fundamentally reshaped the concept into a territorial idea serving imperial rule. This cognitive paradigm not only profoundly shaped the worldviews of the later Roman Empire and Christian Europe but also established the foundational logic for the Western imagination of"empire".
