John Dryden,a pioneering figure of Neoclassicism, lived in an era featured by the intensifying ferocity of the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns in England, and kept engaging with the relative merits of the“Ancients”and the“Moderns”throughout his literary career. However, the academia has not reached a consensus on Dryden’s position in this pivotal debate. This article employs Dryden’s literary criticism, plays, and letters as the primary materials to clarify his standpoint and intention in the debate:His strong national consciousness, coupled with his belief in the idea of progress, positioned him as a key figure among the Moderns, yet his skeptical mind grounded his perspective in the values of the Ancients.Dryden’s hesitance and ambivalence embody the complexity of the intellectual climate and geopolitical concerns in Britain during a period of cultural transition and can shed light on contemporary discussions of literary innovation.
