Under the modern patriarchy, the commodification of women’s bodies and sexuality has been prevalent globally. In Japan,as the“imperial will”expanded overseas, many lower-class women from local societies crossed borders to foreign lands, using their bodies as physical capital for modern Japan. This phenomenon shaped the characteristics of Japan’s prostitution industry. In the post-World War Ⅱ context of reflection and reconstruction, this group was,on the one hand, invested with a certain degree of historical agency, and on the other hand, absorbed into the framework of the nation-state.This provides a mirror for reflection on the historical perceptions of postwar Japan’s government and society,as well as its contemporary social ills.
