黄炎培的图书馆实践与观念研究——纪念黄炎培先生逝世60周年

A Study on Huang Yanpei's Library Practices and Conceptions——In Memory of the 60th Anniversary of His Passing

摘要 文章运用史料钩沉的方法,对黄炎培的图书馆实践进行梳理与分析。在简要回顾黄炎培的生平及其与图书馆的渊源后,从赴美教育考察及归国后的图书馆实践、职业教育发展规划中的图书馆建设等方面阐述黄炎培的图书馆实践活动。黄炎培对图书馆的认识与倡导,与其自身求学、访美经历及当时的社会环境有关;其图书馆观念的特点包括:肯定图书馆对于社会发展的实用教育功能、强调以藏书为中心的图书馆服务与活动、重视图书馆学专业人才。其图书馆观念先进前瞻,且很好地运用到了图书馆实践中。 Huang Yanpei,a renowned figure in modern Chinese education and a prominent advocate of vocational education,also demonstrated profound insights into the value and function of libraries,actively promoting the development of librarianship.Despite his significant involvement in the library field,scholarly attention to his engagement with libraries remains limited.On the 60th anniversary of Huang Yanpei's passing,this paper examines his library-related practices and conceptions,shedding light on his role in China's modern library development.Using historical research methods and drawing upon primary sources such as Huang's published works and writings,diaries,and Republican-era publications,the paper explores how his educational investigation tour in the United States influenced his philosophy and inspired him to integrate library development into broader framework of vocational education development plans in China.Finally,the paper offers an analysis and evaluation of his library conceptions.The study finds that although Huang was not a professional librarian,his administrative and intellectual work remained closely linked with libraries throughout his career.Notably,his leadership positions and the affiliated institution chronologically coincided with the pivotal moments in the modern Chinese library development.In 1915,Huang visited the United States to study the education system which also encompassed an investigation of the library practices.He introduced advanced Western library models to China,emphasizing the educational value of libraries,advocating for the establishment of systematic and service-oriented operations,and calling for professional training of librarians.His understanding of modern library principles was comparable to that of professional library science researchers.He organized and promoted national library advocacy through figures like Shen Zurong,Mary Elizabeth Wood and others,marking the starting point of national lecture tour to promote libraries and initiating what became known as the New Library Movement.In this sense,Huang made indispensable contributions to the development of modern Chinese librarianship.As an educator,Huang recognized the professionalism of the librarianship and supported the establishment of short-term librarian training courses while chairing the Southeast University's Board of Trustees.Additionally,Huang emphasized the role of libraries in vocational education development.His vocational education philosophy can be broadly divided into three stages:practical education,vocational education,and grand vocational educationism.During the practical education and vocational education stages,he respectively initiated the establishment of the Chuansha Educational Library and the Workers Education Hall.In the grand vocational educationism stage,he strongly supported the construction of rural libraries and amateur libraries.In conclusion,Huang's library conceptions can be summarized as:affirming the practical educational function of libraries in social development,emphasizing collection-centered library services and activities,and valuing the training of professional library personnel.These conceptions were shaped by the influence of Cai Yuanpei,inspiration from American library experiences,and the driving force of modern Chinese social education demands.Finally,this paper examines modern Chinese library development within the broader context of social reform,based on the value of Huang's library conceptions.It argues that the educational value assigned to libraries by all sectors during the New Education Movement was a critical factor in China's modern library development.The sustained progress of contemporary Chinese libraries depends on highlighting educational value in narratives of social responsibility and function-both a reflection of historical lessons and a response to the demands of lifelong learning.
