Abstractions are widely used in English poetry,a phenomenon that is much more common than in Chinese poetry. In contrast,English poetry has a long-standing tradition of capitalization and personification of abstract concepts while classical Chinese poetry does not incorporate this particular practice. It was not until the modern period in China, when literary creation was influenced by Western learning, that there was a significant use of abstractions in Chinese poetry. This article selects representative English poems from the Renaissance onwards for reading and analysis in terms of their application of abstractions, comparing the direct expression of emotions through abstract concepts in Western poetry with the hidden approach of Chinese classical poetry towards"ideas."It explores the different thinking patterns and poetic traditions between the East and the West. Finally,it introduces the critique by the famous 20th-century poet Ezra Pound on the excessive use of abstract expressions in English poetry and the decline of abstractions in modern English poetry.
