Abdulrazak Gurnah's Gravel Heart exposes the democratic predicaments of postcolonial African countries through a three-generational diasporic saga.In Gurnah's narrative, the post-Zanzibar Revolution ruling elites consolidated power by wielding decolonization discourse, triggering mass displacement. The complex contradictions within overseas African ethnic communities reflect the challenges of African integration.Through analyzing the interplay among violence, memory, and space, alongside Africa's political evolution, this study demonstrates that Gurnah's familial trauma narrative traces the root of postcolonial Africa's democratic crisis to the collusion between colonial legacies and indigenous power structures.Furthermore,Gurnah's depiction of diasporic individuals reconstructing their homeland and negotiating belonging in foreign lands transcends traditional nationalist frameworks.Ultimately, through the characters'psychological shift from conflict to reconciliation,Gurnah articulates a constructive vision for Africa's future development.
