William Faulkner's short story"A Rose for Emily"has long been a focus of literary criticism due to its mysterious antagonist Emily. In light of Susan Sontag's theory of"Against Interpretation,"this paper aims to analyze how Faulkner resists simplistic readings of Miss Emily through fragmented and repeated narration and deliberate concealment of details. It argues that interpretations by the townspeople, readers, and critics often reduce Emily to a social allegory or moral symbol, overlooking her complexity as a"living individual".Literary criticism should return to an awe for human complexity rather than seeking definitive, reductive conclusions. This study advocates for abandoning the pursuit of abstract meaning in favor of sensory engagement and aesthetic intuition so that readers can approach the true Emily as an individual. It is Emily's irresolvable mystery that lies the secret of her eternal artistic life and ever-glowing charm.
