This article focuses on the narrative shift in Li Juan's Winter Pasture, exploring how the author reconfigures her relationship with"the Other"through lived experiences in the borderlands.Through close textual analysis and a comparison with The Remote Sunflower Field, the paper traces the transformation of Li's narrative stance from detached observation to shared cohabitation.By engaging with everyday practices such as labor, hospitality, and belief systems,Li attempts to approach Kazakh pastoral life in a non-intrusive manner. Her direct acknowledgment of linguistic and cultural boundaries demonstrates a conscious awareness of the limitations of understanding. At the same time,Winter Pasture documents the final stage of Kazakh nomadic life, marking a transition from textual representation to experiential farewell. The book can be viewed as a form of cultural documentation grounded in cohabitation experience, offering insight into alternative approaches to cultural narration in contemporary nonfiction writing.
