“乡下人”一词,既是《乡下人的悲歌》一书中的主题,也是其叙述的主体与客体,即被中产阶级的利益集团以负面事例刻板化的乡村农民,也是白人阵营中被践踏与排斥的对象。万斯在《乡下人的悲歌》中对于“乡下人”的描述,以及他对这个人物形象的重新塑造,使得这个人物成为一个反抗恶意诽谤、维护自己文化遗产的文化战士。他对主流文化的选择接纳与重构,蕴含着美国历史与现实的正反两方面的特点,也包括了对“他者”的贬抑与自我认同。“乡下人”这个词语背后所代表的含义,既是当代美国反思与协商的虚构空间,也是劳动阶层重新界定个体文化认同的舞台。在重构文化意象的同时,它也对本土文化特质与价值象征进行了再界定。
The term“hillbilly”is not only the theme of Hillbilly Elegy,but also the“subject”or“object”of its narrative.“Hillbilly”is meant the rural farmers who are stereotyped as“negative examples”by the groups of middle class interests,and who are the trampled and excluded within the white community.However,in Hillbilly Elegy Vance’s description and reimage of the“hillbilly”,has transformed the image of“hillbilly”in common sense into a cultural warrior,who resisted malicious slander and defended his cultural heritage.The hillbilly’s selective acceptance and reconstruction of the mainstream culture,reflect both of the positive and negative aspects of American history and reality,including his denigration of the“other”and the quest for his self-dentity.The meaning behind the term“hillbilly”represents not only a fictional space for contemporary American reflection and negotiation,but also a stage for the working class to redefine individual’s cultural identity.While reconstructing cultural imagery,the term“hillbilly”also redefines the traits and symbolic value of local culture.
