Margaret Atwood is a writer with distinct feminine consciousness. But to what extent her works can be regarded as feminist masterpieces is controversial.By analyzing three characters from her early masterpiece The Edible Woman and examining their resistance mode and effect against the existing power structure, this paper defines these seemingly rebellious characters as disguised, temporary, and limited rebels.By constructing and deconstructing their modes of resistance, this paper suggests that Atwood is not a typical feminist.Instead, she’s better described as a“feminist fellow-traveler”who was embraced by feminism due to her alignment with the popular ideologies of her time. Her works break down the binary oppositions of male/female and victimizer/victim,reflecting a gender-equal perspective.
