Hu Shih served as the Chinese ambassador to the United States from September 1938 to September 1942,though his performance in this high-ranking position has been a subject of controversy among scholars.During this period, major American newspapers such as The New York Times and The Washington Post extensively reported on Hu’s statements and activities, and through this coverage one can gain insight into how American news outlets regarded Hu’s performance as ambassador. The Washington Post primarily tracked Hu Shih’s various diplomatic activities and social engagements revolving around the local Chinese diaspora, while The New York Times focused more on promoting Hu Shih’s calls for resistance or aid in China’s struggle against Japan. The two newspapers offered high praise for Hu Shih’s ambassadorial work, even going so far as to call him the best Chinese diplomat in modern times.
