In the later period of his career, the Ming Dynasty Wu School painter Xie Shichen created several monumental scrolls themed around Wu Gorge, four of which are currently or were once housed in Japan. This article traces Xie Shichen's travel footprints through literature review and categorizes his scenic paintings into two types—their style determined by the artist's creative motivation or whether he visited the locations in person. It further concludes that the Wu Gorge theme works were not based on actual scenery but on the poetic imagery of Tang Dynasty poets, representing a dialogue between the painter and the poetic sage Du Fu.
