Yang Dongming's Jimin Tushuo(Illustrated Account of Starving People)employs visualtextual narratives transgressing ethical norms to stir Emperor Wanli’s compassion, prompting imperial disaster relief orders and catalyzing structural reforms to the late Ming relief systems. As a pioneering visual-textual documentation of disaster history, its public-oriented ethos and sociopolitical engagement epitomize the moral consciousness and civic responsibility of late Ming scholar-officials like Yang. This act of submitting illustrated petitions not only reflects the urgency of famine relief in the late Ming, but also epitomizes how systemic contradictions compelled incremental institutional adaptations.
