This paper examines Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, exploring the ethical identities and choices of its characters from the perspectives of gender ethics and contract ethics, based on ethical literary criticism. It also reveals the behavior motivations and value orientations of the characters in ethical conflicts.Furthermore, the research finds that in the patriarchal society, female characters, such as Portia and Jessica, inevitably possess a passive and compromised nature, while at the same time, they are also rebellious to the traditional gender norms.Besides, the contract ethics is explored, centering on various contractual conflicts in the play, such as the well-known"a pound of flesh"contract.By analyzing the society of Venice at the end of 16th century, this paper is aimed to provide a new perspective for the field of ethical literary criticism and offer valuable insights to contemporary issues of gender equality and contract spirits.
