摘要
论文通过梳理近代以来语言在形式、地位及习得上的变化,探究新马华文学校教学媒介语转变的相关问题,揭示曾囿于地域藩篱的新马华校是“缘何”以及“如何”打破长期以来的地域边界,最终从方言教学转为“国语”这一通用语言教学的过程。自19世纪下半叶的大移民浪潮以来,华文教育随着华人奔赴海外的迁徙流动而渐渐兴起,走过了百余年的发展历程,其中又以新加坡和马来西亚两地为典型。从19世纪末至20世纪40年代,新马两地华文学校逐渐从畛域分明的旧式方言义塾转为以“国语”为教学媒介语的新式侨民学校,这一重要转向过程的发生要追溯到新马华侨与祖国的历史互动。晚清以来,先进知识分子对语言与国家前途命运关系的反思,推动了我国现代意义上的语言规划的开端,而这一过程又与修正的侨务观念交织在一起,深刻影响了海外华侨学校的语言使用。
With the influx of Chinese immigrants to Southeast Asia during the second half of the 19th century,Chinese schools took off there,especially in Singapore and Malaya.From the late 19th century to the 1940s,Chinese schools in Singapore and Malaya changed significantly from dispersed vernacular schools to unified modern educational institutes,in which the medium of instruction was the Chinese language.Such a shift took place against a grandiose backdrop,in which progressive Chinese intellectuals started to contemplate the relationship between the Chinese language and China's prosperity,and thus the promotion of Chinese language curriculum in the country.Such a top-down language reform was also intertwined with overseas Chinese affairs.From introducing the Beijing Mandarin to promoting it as the medium of instruction,Chinese vernacular schools in Singapore and Malaya hence broke regional barriers and became closely connected with each other,under a common goal of cultivating Chinese national identity and ethnic identity amongst the local Chinese communities.
