Irregular forces,or non⁃Central government forces were a unique component of the Kuomintang Army.An ex⁃amination of the experiences of specific commanders of irregular forces offers us insights into the complex dynamics of faction⁃al integration and inter⁃factional relations within the KMT Army during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.Ding Zhipan, originally affiliated with the Zhili⁃Shandong Army clique, pledged allegiance to KMT alongside his superiors in 1928.His military education at the Nanjing Army War College in the 1930s significantly enhanced his military literacy and strategic thinking, and it solidified his loyalty to the KMT central authority.During the early stages of the resistance war,the Nationalist Government adopted an evaluation approach for irregular forces based on results in actual combats, and Ding Zhi⁃pan was rewarded for his outstanding battlefield performance. However, from 1940 onward, commanders of similar back⁃grounds gradually lost their military authority or were denied regular promotions.By the end of the war,Ding's 26th Army had been taken over by Central Army commanders. The wartime experiences of Ding Zhipan and other irregular commanders re⁃veals the flawed nature of the KMT central government's integration of irregular forces, resulting in unnecessary degradation of military effectiveness.Besides,Ding was repeatedly scapegoated or sacrificed by regional military figures during the war,a pattern emblematic of the fraught relationships among non⁃central forces in the KMT Army.
