As Helen Dunmore’s first novel about war,Zennor in Darkness depicted the tragic situation of frontline soldiers, residents and non-residents of Zennor, who became“bare lives”in the face of the loss of control of British wartime policies during the late stage of World War I.However, various identity groups represented by John,Clare, and the Lawrences tried to break free from the constraints of wartime ideology and completed the transition from blind obedience to life governance to life awakening.Zennor in Darkness implied Dunmore’s exploration of the path of life redemption, empowered people with opportunities to seek life liberation in the turbulent wartime society, and provided reference for establishing an ideal community of life after the war.
