Hidden truancy refers to the behavior of students who attend classes at designated locations on time but engage in activities unrelated to learning. With the development of online teaching, the problem of hidden truancy has become increasingly prominent.Based on Grounded Theory, this paper examines hidden truancy in online teaching by interviewing 14 sophomore and junior students majoring in elementary education at a provincial university in northern China. The results indicate that this phenomenon is attributed to both internal and external factors.Internal factors involve the correctness of students’learning concepts, their preparedness for attendance,self-control,and perception of hidden truancy costs, whereas external factors include teachers’teaching methods and attitudes, and whether the curriculum is properly structured. In order to cut down on hidden truancy in online learning among college and university students, the joint efforts of the students themselves and external factors are necessary.
