Die Chinesen:Psychogramm einer Weltmacht is a typical example of a“multisource transwriting”text. This book offers an interpretation of China’s historical events, proverbs, and national ecology, representing the Western“gaze”on contemporary China. This study focuses on this book, examining its sources, translation processes, and the ways in which it constructs the image of contemporary Chinese society through the Western“gaze”.The study reveals that the book misrepresents Chinese society and culture, reflecting a one-sided understanding of China. This“gaze”embodies a sense of othering in the West, leading to cultural misunderstandings and stereotypes in the portrayal of China, which in turn influence the perceptions and judgments of Western readers.
