The portrayal of neurasthenia in Natsume Souseki's later literary works is particularly unique, exhibiting a more modern stylistic representation compared to his earlier works. The works delicately depict characters as abnormally sensitive to external stimuli such as sound, smell, and color, along with physical manifestations like insomnia, vivid dreams, and physical weakness. They subtly reveal various mental phenomena such as suspicion, delusions, depression, and isolation in individuals suffering from such ailments.Souseki's literature portrays “neurasthenia”,a prevalent psychosomatic disorder. There is a significant difference in the background of writing about this condition between his early and later works. The Russo-Japanese War is a key factor in the ideological shift that underlies this difference. In Souseki's later literature, intellectuals suffering from this condition, living in the context of Japan's imperialist economic development, begin to ponder issues of faith and self-existence.His later literary works imply that the emergence of “neurasthenia” as an illness is a metaphorical representation of the ailments arising from Japan's path towards an imperialist economy in modern times.
