There used to be Xingjiao Temple in Nanping Mountain near West Lake,Hangzhou. There are five seated cliff statues next to the ruins of the temple. They are a combination of the Three Saints of West Paradise,a Zen master and a lay Buddhist.Among them, the statue of the Zen master is the figure of Linji school monk Kentang Yanchong, the ninth abbot of Jingci Temple in Lin'an(present-day Hangzhou)of Southern Song Dynasty. The Zen master was active in the 12th century. Both Jingci Temple and Xingjiao Temple are located at the northern foot of Nanping Mountain.Among them, the layman Cheng’an has not yet been tested. It is estimated that he was a contemporary of Zen Master Kentang. These statues were likely carved in the Southern Song Dynasty.Among the known caves and niches, there are rare statues of lay people in China. This cliff statue seems to be the first of its kind to combine Zen masters, lay Buddhist and the Three Saints of Western Paradise or others such as one Buddha and two Bodhisattvas. The cliff statues at the Xingjiao Temple site in Hangzhou should be of great significance to the study of the localization and popularization of Buddhist gods and lay Buddhism.
