In the Song Dynasty, when frequenting brothels and patronizing courtesans were widespread, female courtesans and their artistic performances were integral to the daily lives of many literati. This article employs a historical ethnomusicological fieldwork approach to investigate the social activities of courtesans during the period of the "anti—courtesan decree." It examines courtesans' roles in banquet settings, their interactions with literati, and their representation in contemporary writings.Using courtesan Wen Wan as a case study, this research analyses how gender discourse shaped the depiction and perception of courtesans in this period.
