The increase in the number of children under the“three-child policy”and supporting measures means that the burden of family care increases.A benchmark regression model is constructed using CHARLS cross-sectional data to explore the relationship between grandparental care and labor supply among middle-aged and elderly people aged 45~75 in China. The results of the empirical analysis show that grandparental care has a significant negative impact on the labor supply of middle-aged and elderly people. In terms of heterogeneity analysis, the inhibitory effect of grandparental care on labor supply of rural middle-aged and elderly people, female middle-aged and elderly people and middle-aged people is more significant. When the number of grandchildren reaches three or more,middle-aged and elderly groups are more willing to participate in social labor. In terms of the mechanism of action, grandparental care has an inhibitory effect on the labor supply of the middle-aged and the elderly through directly crowding out the labor hours of the middle-aged and increasing the financial support of children to the middle-aged and the elderly. In this regard, society can mitigate the negative impact of grandparental care on the labour supply of the middle-aged and the elderly by setting up community mutual-aid organizations, creating flexible employment opportunities and increasing investment in the childcare industry.
