Western people started to learn about Lord Guan(also known as Guan Yu),one of the deities in Chinese folk religion,in the Age of Discovery. The typical eastern image of Guan Yu holding a knife in The Boxer Codex,a late-16th-Century Spanish manuscript, was drawn by a Fujian painter;later, with creative imagination,Dutch writer Olfert Dapper created a painting of Lord Guan reading a book at night according to the records of envoys who visited China, which has been passed down to this day.In western travelogues and other documents,Lord Guan had the characteristies of the Yellow Emperor and the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty, and became an omnipotent deity in politics, military and technology, which was different from its image in the east. The image of Lord Guan created in the west in the 16th and 17th Centuries helped eliminate cultural barriers between China and the west, and provides a perspective for studying early cultural exchanges between the east and the west.
