Marilynne Robinson portrays the titular hero of her most recent novel Jack as a flaneur,and examines the human dimension of modernism through his wanderings in three cities in central U.S.From the perspective of the trialectics of space,Jack’s flaneuring bears witness to the molding process of capitalist American culture,acts out his objection to consumerism,and more importantly,lays bare his resolution to challenge the ideological status quo through his interracial marriage to a black woman.With the portrayal of Jack as a flaneur and the spatial writing in the novel,Robinson offers not only her reflections on American modernism but also her penetrating insights into contemporary issues in American society.
