From 2019 to 2020, the Xi'an City Institute of Cultural Relic Conservation and Archaeology et al. excavated 62 tombs dating from the Qin and Han through Ming and Qing periods in Shangtapo Village,Chang'an District, Xi'an City. Amongst them, tomb nos. 22, 27, 34, and 58 were all well-preserved single-chamber cave tombs with long sloping passageways. Artifacts unearthed include stone epitaphs, objects made of pottery, porcelain, bronze, iron, gold and silver, as well as bronze coins, and stone chess pieces. Based on epitaphs, it is known that these four tombs belonged to the early Tang Dynasty Wei family. Tomb occupants were identified as Wei Tui and his wife, Wei Tui's son Wei Xian, and Wei Ze, as well as Wei Ze's son Wei Shen and his wife. They all belonged to the branch of the Duke of Xiaoyao of the Jingzhao Wei clan. The excavation of this family cemetery provides valuable material for the study of early Tang Dynasty family burial systems in the Chang'an region, as well as genealogy of the Wei family.
