In 1936,the famous Irish poet W.B.Yeats wrote a poem named Lapis Lazuli, inspired by a Chinese lapis lazuli sculpture(Shan zi)from the Qing Dynasty, and expressed his appreciation for the“Oriental wisdom”.However, little attention has been paid to the fact that the sculpture was also engraved with a poem by Emperor Qianlong, which reflects another oriental narrative.Following this clue, the paper reviews the brief and little-known material culture history of lapis lazuli at the Chinese royal court in 18th-century,and how this artistic medium, once widely used in the history of Eurasia civilizations, has inspired unique creativity and imagination in the process of transcultural dissemination.
