With the rapid development of digital technology, contemporary adolescents have greater opportunities and confidence to participate in political life. How news information facilitates adolescents’public engagement is a theoretical and practical issue that requires critical attention. Therefore, this paper illustrates the results of 1293 adolescents aged 12-19 regarding the working mechanism of incidental news exposure via social media on online political efficacy, political discussion, and latent political participation using structural equation model. It’s found that:(1)Incidental news exposure on social media has a significant positive effect on adolescents’latent political participation;(2)Online political efficacy and political discussion both play a mediating role in the mechanism of incidental news exposure on social media’s improving adolescents’latent political participation;(3)Besides,the transmission and united effects between online political efficacy and political discussion form a distal mediating role. This work clarifies the internal logic between media use and adolescents’political participation by focusing on the characteristics of adolescents’cognitive development, and finally concludes a theoretical model of“usage-efficiency-discussion-behavior”to interpret adolescents’political participation.
