The mid-to-late ninth century, although only a few decades, was a period that saw the establishment of an important pattern of Sion-Japanese exchanges, and that pattern lasted for several centuries afterward. This article investigates two collections of poems and letters written by the Tang sea merchants and offers an in-depth analysis of the interactions between merchants and monks who traveled between China and Japan in the mid-to-late ninth century. It shows that Buddhism was an important factor in the interactions between merchants and monks. It seemed that the monks in many aspects relied on the sea merchants’help:crossing the sea, purchasing sutras, and passing messages. But actually, the sea merchants also benefited from this cooperation. The merchants took advantage of their connections to the monks and used the Buddhist network that the monks were a part of to increase their trade profit.Because of the cooperation between the merchants and monks, the Buddhist network and trade network started to overlap and even integrate,a tendency that was further consolidated in the next coming centuries.
