A laboratory experiment was conducted involving farmland soil incubation, BCR sequential extraction procedure and simplified bio-accessibility extraction test(SBET) with a purpose to investigate the effects of sludge compost of a wastewater treatment plant, which was added to the soil sample, on the speciation of heavy metal(Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn) and the relevant bio-accessibility. The experiment showed that the addition of sludge compost significantly increased total heavy metals concentrations in the soil, and the decrease of residual fraction of heavy metals ranging from 12% to 42%, while the bioaccessibility of heavy metals in soils increases with the increasing addition of sludge. Furthermore, relevant risk assessment was carried out by RAC(risk assessment code), and the result indicated that Zn in the soil added with sludge compost posed a low to medium ecological risk while Cr posed low ecological risk;besides, the health risk assessment revealed that the total non-carcinogenic risk(HI) and carcinogenic risk(CR) to children and adults caused by sludge-compost-added soil were within the acceptable range.
