Intrauterine growth retardation(IUGR)can reduce the survival rate and growth performance of piglets and cause tremendous economic losses to the pig industry. How to effectively reduce the birth of IUGR piglets has always been a scientific issue of concern. Placenta is a highly vascularized organ. Abnormal placental angiogenesis hinders the normal transportation of oxygen and nutrients, leading to the placenta fail to provide enough nutrients to the fetus, which might be an important contributing factor to the occurrence of IUGR piglets.Given the important role of placental blood vessels in the growth of fetus, this article reviewed the role of placental angiogenesis in the development of fetal pigs and the nutritional factors that regulated the development of placental blood vessels, which will help to further understand the molecular mechanism of IUGR piglets and provide nutritional regulation strategies for decreasing the occurrence of IUGR piglets.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2022,34(2):727-735]
