George Saunders’s Lincoln in the Bardo, which focuses on a group of ghosts who stay in the Bardo to tell the story of American President Lincoln and the Civil War,manifests the novelist’s unique historical consciousness of violence and death.By exaggerating death, the novel emphasizes the unrepresentability and illogic of history, which goes beyond rational cognition, but its emphasis on personal consciousness and individual experience also indicates Saunders’s realist concerns for humanity.Following the subversive postmodern tradition and wandering between satire and sincerity in narration, the novel re-conceptualizes American history at the poetic level, maintains a balance between fantasy and rationality in historical writing, and rewrites the American myth of a unified nation both with postmodern techniques and clear political implications.
