摘要
恰当地评估大运河的历史作用及其在今天的历史遗产,需要考稽不同历史阶段它在帝国与众多个性不同的区域里的并不完全协和的角色。隋唐以来的大运河,特别是在其作为帝国生命线的明清阶段,是大陆型中华帝国政治经济战略部署的核心内容。中央政府通过作为运输漕粮的运河的管统,有效地占有帝国的主要经济资源,实现了贯彻大一统政治经济整合的初衷,尽管穿越内陆腹地的运行代价异常高昂。然而,对地方而言,大运河重塑了沿线各个区域的自然与社会构造,左右了其经济与文化发展的起伏,正面与负面、积极与消极作用,因地、因时而异。但整体上说,大运河深化了不同的区域经济、社会、文化发展模式,并且促使了各个文明区域之间的互动和汇通,从而推进了“多元一体”传统文明的丰富和提升。而开埠以来,失去了国家力量的大运河的不同河段和各个区域又发生戏剧般变化,使我们看到历史运动中的延续与变异。
To appropriately appraise the historical significance and legacy of the Grand Canal,it is necessary to examine its divergent roles in imperial and distinctive regional perspectives in different periods.The Grand Canal since the Sui&Tang dynasties,especially in the Ming&Qing dynasties with the canal as their lifeline,acted as the core of the continental Chinese empire’s politico-economic programming.Via control of the canal that transported the tribute grain,the central government effectively acquired the major economic resource of the empire,achieving its objective of politico-economic unification,regardless of the extreme high price pertaining to the canal’s hard operation in the hinterland.However,in local eyes,the canal remodeled the regional natural and social structures along its course,causing whether positive or negative economic and cultural fluctuations varied spatially and temporally.Overall notwithstanding,the Grand Canal intensified individual regional economic,social and cultural modes of development,thus enriching and improving the“pluralistic integration”of traditional Chinese civilization.Then,losing the state power’s support the Grand Canal in its different sessions as well as different canal regions experienced modern dramatic trajectories,from which we can learn the continuation and changes in historical process.
