Mia Couto has been hailed as one of the most prominent writers in Mozambique. His first novel Terra Sonambula, greeted as one of the greatest African novels in the 20 th century, describes the cruelty and far-reaching influence of Mozambique civil war in a magical manner. It uses visionary narrative to map out life states and actual facts of the civil war, and employs the device of alienation to disclose the distortion of humanity. Meanwhile, it adopts disruptive temporality to reflect the collapse of history and the crisis of belief and identity. Based on the analyses of Couto’s magical devices of writing war from the three dimensions above, the paper attempts to explore the unique characteristics of Couto’s magical writing as well as their realistic significance in African cultural context. It is argued that Couto, deeming reality and magic as one entity, draws on magical writing to reflect on the destruction of the civil war and its residual, to unveil the colonial inclination of mosaicizing African national history, and to verbally remap the whole Mozambique as well.
