Forty six species of fossil spores and pollen assigned to thirty nine genera are recorded from 6 samples of Borehole HC2 in the Hami Depression, Xinjiang, Northwest China. Two sporopollen assemblages, Limatulasporites Cyclogranisporites Alisporites (of the Jiucaiyuan Fm.) and Limatulasporites Lundbladispora Taeniaesporites Assemblages (of the Shaofanggou Fm.), have been proposed. The present assemblages are comparable with those from the Jiucaiyuan and Shaofanggou Formations located on the south margin of the Junggar Basin and the Early Triassic assemblages from Australia and Western Canada, suggested an Early Triassic age for the Jiucaiyuan and Shaofanggou Formations in the Hami Depression. The discovery of the sporopollen assemblages from Borehole HC2 provides paleontologic evidence for the existence of the Lower Triassic strata in the Hami Depression, Xinjiang.
