How Do Bilateral Diplomatic Relations Affect Overseas Market Performance of Multinational Companies

摘要 国家间的外交关系对跨国企业国际化的影响是近年来新兴话题。外交关系对跨国企业的海外市场绩效有何影响?这种影响的内在作用机制是什么?现有文献并未对其进行分析和探讨。本文从国家之间主动构建的制度视角,基于制度理论,使用二手数据和问卷调查相结合的方式,对双边外交关系是否促进跨国企业海外市场绩效这一关键问题进行了深入研究,同时进一步探讨了双边外交关系对跨国企业海外市场绩效的中介机制和影响边界。研究发现,母国与东道国的外交关系作为一种主动构建的制度安排,可以通过增加跨国企业在东道国市场的合法性进而促进跨国企业的海外市场绩效。与非国有跨国企业相比,国有跨国企业在利用外交关系获取东道国合法性方面能力更强;东道国的制度质量越差,双边外交关系对跨国企业在东道国市场的合法性获取的积极影响越强;随着东道国竞争强度的增加,跨国企业在东道国市场的合法性对其海外市场绩效的正向影响会加强。本文不仅基于制度理论的视角丰富了双边外交关系与跨国企业海外市场绩效的研究,而且为跨国企业如何利用国家外交关系提升海外经营绩效提供了有益的实践启示。 In recent years,the influence of diplomatic relations between home country and host country on the internationalization of multinational companies is an emerging topic.What is the impact of diplomatic relations on the performance of multinational companies in the overseas market?What is the potential mediating mechanism of this influence?It has not been analyzed and discussed in the existing literature.Based on the institutional theory,this paper combined primary data with secondary data from the perspective of institutional manipulability at supranational level,which made an insightful study on whether bilateral diplomacy promote the performance of multinational companies?In the overseas market,and further explored the mediating mechanism?And influence boundary of this effect.The research results show that the diplomatic relationship between the home country and the host country,as a constructed and manipulable institutional arrangement,can improve the performance of multinational companies in the overseas market by increasing their legitimacy in the host country market.Meanwhile,compared with non-state-owned multinational companies,state-owned ones are more competent to make use of diplomatic relations to gain the legitimacy of the host country.However,with the increase of quality of host institutions,the positive spillover effect of diplomatic relations on the legitimacy of multinational companies in the host country will also be weakened.In addition,the competition intensity in the host country market will also moderate the positive effectiveness of legitimacy,that is,as the competition intensity increases in the host country,legitimacy in the host market of multinational companies has a more positive impact on the performance of multinational companies.
