On the Guangfulin site in southwestern Shanghai City, three seasons of excavation have been carried out since 1999, which resulted in the discovery of remains of the Liangzhu culture, Guangfulin type and Eastern Zhou ~ Han periods. The vestiges of the Liangzhu culture comprise nine ash-pits, three ash-trenches, 23 tombs and ten other units. They yielded pottery, stone tools, jades and bone articles. The pottery is the main objects, including ding tripods, dou stemmed vessels, double-nosed pots, gut food containers, cups, dishes, jars, lids and triple yi ewers. The stone tools are yue battle-axes, adzes, sickles, weeding implements, ploughs, etc. Among the jades are awl-shaped objects, rings, tubes, beads and small pieces. The bone artifacts are arrowheads. The Guangfulin type remains embraces 15 ash-pits and pottery vessels, stone implements, bone articles and tooth artifacts. The pottery includes ding, jars, urns, dou , basins, dishes, bo bowls and cups; the stone implements, axes, adzes, chisels, knives and arrowheads; and the bone and tooth articles are principally awls. In date the Liangzhu remains correspond to an earlier phase of the whole culture. The Guangfulin type of remains shows to have no local roots but to be much similar to the Nandang culture and Wangyoufang type. Its discovery puts new problems in the study of the cultural pedigree and civilization course in the Taihu Lake area.
