A stele, Jiaoyu Kang Gong Muzhi (dated 1461) recently discovered at Fengyi in Dali, Yunnan records that the Meng-Yuan appointed a Han migrant fromShaanxi in North China named Kang Min as the “Nominal Babai Pacification Commissioner”. This article examines the nature of Kang Min’s appointment, and attempts to establish what function he performed in the Yamen of the Mongol-Yuan dynasty Native Official in the Lanna polity. The purpose is to deepen our understanding of how the Mongol-Yuan utilized Native Officials to control the South and Southwest parts of Yunnan and northern mainland Southeast Asia. I argue that Native Officials at the margins of Mongol-Yuan controlled territory used officials like Kang Min as clerks to handle official written communications in order to improve the administrative capability of their Yamens. I also hypothesize that the Duan Family General Administrator may have selected and supplied Native Officials with clerical and low-level administrative staff.
