This article makes an investigation of the population of deers and their distribution in North China during the period from the third to the ninth century. In this period there were large numbers of sikas, musk deers and roe deers and a small number of elks in this region. Compared with the times before the Period of Spring and Autumn, the populations of deers and their living areas were both obviously reduced. However, the numbers were still considerably large compared to those in the recent and late ancient times. The changes in the number and living areas of deers were a compound indication of changes in local ecological environment and were closely related to population density, mode of production and intensity of economic activities. The fact of the existence of a large population of deers in North China during the middle ancient times pointed to the good ecological environment at that time.
