The Ministry of Communications will begin to re-arrange the water transportation system from July 1st. Among other changes, abolishing quota management, enhanced management of qualifications and clarified work divisions have aroused great concern within the maritime circle. Recently, our reporter interviewed officials from the Water Transport Department of the Ministry of Communications and got to know that the adjustment is aimed to enhance market management, emphasize regulation by market forces and strengthen the competitiveness of Chinese enterprises in the international market. After WTO accession, it becomes fundamental for China to follow the international practices while this re-arrangement will lighten the future for the development of Chinese water transportation market.
