Australian reconciliation novels, appearing mostly at the beginning of the 21st century, answer the call for a new national image and identity by confronting with the colonial past and seeking for reconciliation between Aboriginals and non-Aboriginals. But owing to different representations and interpretations of the history and race, they have made themselves a good subject for public debate and discussions. By taking Carpentaria and The Secret River as examples, this essay argues that the literary criticisms on reconciliation novels reveal the interaction between public and private discourses on history, race and identity, and the important changes and trends happening to literary research indicate the significance of boundary-crossing and interdisciplinary perspectives in the research of Australian national literature.
